UN unearths 50 mass graves in Democratic Republic of Congo

-
A  United Nations  rights group has unearthed more than 50 mass graves in the western  Democratic Republic of Congo  after a spate of killings were reported in the region last month. Abdoul Aziz Thioye, the director of the UN Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), said on Saturday that "more than 50 mass graves, as well as common and individual graves that we have identified," were uncovered in the town of Yumbi in the DRC's western province of  Mai-Ndombe . The Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on Friday struck out a motion seeking a stay of judgment delivered by the Zamfara High Court, allowing the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field candidates in the 2019 Election. The motion was filed by the appellant, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Kabiru Marafa, and 129 others through their counsel, Mr Benson Igbanoi. Delivering judgement, Justice Ahmad Belgore ordered the parties in the suit to exchange necessary correspondences according to stipulated rules concerning pre-election matters. Belgore adjourned the case until March 13, for hearing. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Zamfara High Court recognised the primary elections held by APC in the state and declared that INEC accept the party candidates for the elections. Unsatisfied with State High Court decision, the appellants approached the appeal court challenging the decision on the ground that the State High Court lacked jurisdicti...
