Extra judicial massacre

The senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has blamed the Nigerian military over an attack that left several members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria dead and many others injured at the weekend. The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, confirmed to Premium Times that 60 bodies had been deposited at the hospital. A source told PREMIUM TIMES the figure exceeds 100, while the Shiites Islamic Movement in Nigeria says hundreds, perhaps over a thousand, of its members were killed. The Nigerian Army confirmed it arrested the leader of the group, Ibrahim El-Zazaky, and his wife. An image circulated on the social media Tuesday, purports to show a bloodied Mr. El-Zakzaky sitting on what appears to be the ground, looking frail and tortured. Mr. Sani said in a statement on Tuesday that the attack was nothing but “indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force by the military”. “Silence and neutrality to this amount to nothing but aiding and abetting a clear a

A legal examination of judgment of Taraba guber election tribunal

A legal examination of judgment of Taraba guber election tribunal Published: Saturday, 07 November 2015 22:07Written by Inibehe Effiong The decision of the Taraba State Governorship Election Tribunal delivered on Saturday, 7th November, 2015 has a lot of implications for our electoral jurisprudence. The judgment has laid down a radical, novel and insightful precedent in Nigeria. There is no judicial authority known to me whose facts are on all fours with this case. Let me admit that I have not read the judgment. Therefore, my opinion on the judgment is neither infallible nor sacrosanct. However, the report of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the ratio (reason) for the epochal judgment is instructive. The material part of the report is reproduced below: "The Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a Minister designate, Mrs Aisha Alhassan, as the winner of the April 11 governorship election in the state. In a judgment the

Debt

Debt burden threatens governance in Taraba By Charles Akpeji, Jalingo FROM all indications, the huge expectation of dividends of democracy by the people of Taraba State from the incoming government of former Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Darius Ishaku may turn out to be a mirage considering the precarious financial position of the state. Apart from being hugely indebted to so many sources, which has made the state to go cap in hand looking for survival doles, the system appears incapable of gaining financial strengths to meet the obligations of the state to the people. Following the inability of the out-going governor, Danbaba Suntai who began his administration on a good note before the October 25, 2012 plane crash which forced him out of office, to meet up with the demands of the people, the expectations of the people from the governor- elect, have skyrocketed. From available indices, it is obvious that the tenure of Ishaku would face a herculean t
Taraba Re-run Election: Card readers recovered at Accident Scene ‎ Reports reaching www.yajonline.com‎ indicates that an accident involving a Bus destined for Donga LGA and a local motorcycle operator popularly known as Achaba in Sunkani, the headquarters of Ardo Kola Local Government Area was fatal and lead to the death of the motorcycle operator. It was reported that the bus driver was in a hurry to reach his destination and was driving recklessly and dangerously before the accident.  What surprised most people at the scene was the recovery of 70 INEC Card Readers and some voters card in the Bus.  It was not clear if the bus was hired by INEC to convey electoral materials to Donga LGA or was involved in some form of disingenuous act in active connivance with some Politicians. It should be recalled that Taraba State election was declared inconclusive by INEC and a re-run will take place tomorrow in several LGA’s involving Donga.  INEC is expected to start distributing voting materi

APC's Taraba gov candidate wants state polls cancelled The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Taraba State Senator Aisha Alhassan has called for the cancellation of the elections citing  widespread irregularities and violence. Addressing a press conference at the party's secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Aisha Alhassan said the election in Taraba was marred by the attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the elections in its favour. "As you are very much aware, INEC has declared the Governorship election in Taraba State inconclusive, because - according to the electoral commission - the number of cancelled votes were more than the difference between the votes ganered by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) candidate, that is my humble self, and Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)," she said. She however said the conclusion by INEC does not reflect what really transpired in the said election

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the missing trillions [1] Charles Soludo PoliticsFebruary 2015 Nigeria's Largest Newspaper Directory I read some of the responses to my article, “Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election”, and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the debate. I am glad that the debate has finally taken off. I have decided, for the record, to re-enter the debate if only to set some records straight and hopefully elevate the debate further. Whom do I respond to? First, let me thank Gov Kayode Fayemi for his very mature and professional response on behalf of the APC. It forms a great b asis for deepening the conversation. Pat Utomi, Oby Ezekwesili, Iyabo Obasanjo, and thousands of other patriotic Nigerians have raised the content of the debate. Femi Fani-Kayode made me laugh, as usual. The Gov. Jang faction of the Governors’ Forum played the usual politics, although I know what most of them think privately. Who else? Oh, Peter Obi. Well, since he can’t write and design
