Rivalry

A wonderful lesson in political rivalry

Mauritians are known to be driven by two major passions: football and politics.  These two conversation topics keep cropping up at every opportunity, whatever the location.  They are truly part and parcel of our folklore, though concerning politics, things tend to get out of hand at times.  While football is generally about harmless banter, party allegiance strikes a raw nerve in many people.  Emotion tends to take over. Due to political affiliations, there have been numerous cases of family and friendship break-ups, acts of vandalism and violence, bloodshed, riots, court cases among others.  The list is bleak and long as many Mauritians take political matters at heart, unable to draw the line between political rivalry and political enmity.
Honourable Paul Berenger's coming out about his ailment has resulted in wishes of support and goodwill flooding from all political quarters for his prompt recovery.  Radio channels and virtual platforms such as Facebook have been deluged with messages from Mauritians from all walks of life, irrespective of their political colours.  For a while, rivalry has been tossed aside and it is a welcome change from the usual bickering we are used to witness.  It is heart-warming to find that in trying times, politicians are able to show a united front of solidarity. It is a valuable lesson to the rest of the population that rivalry and enmity should not be confused.  Our political leaders certainly know the difference and maybe it is high time for a few of our compatriots to think twice before hurting others, in the name of politics.  Party leaders have set a good example, that some issues transcend all barriers.  This is the lesson which should be interiorized. Unity, empathy, peace, progress and nation-building all go hand in hand. We are all human and ephemeral, after all. So, let us live as friendly rivals instead of bitter enemies.
