JUST IN: Power supply disrupted as national grid collapses.

The national grid collapsed on Monday. According to data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the power generation dropped from 2,052.37  megawatts to 139.92MW between 2pm and 3pm. Also, out of 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos), NISO said only three are able to load 120MW. Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) accounted for 80MW, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) took 20MW during the period, and Benin DisCo received 20MW All other distribution companies, including Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola, recorded zero allocation.

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared APC candidate Abner Shittu Dahbo winner of Saturday’s bye election for Karim 1 State Constituency of the Taraba State House of Assembly. The APC candidate clinched the seat with 5,895 votes defeating the PDP candidate Ajuji Kanda Ali who got 5,488 votes, Badina Garba of the ADC, a renowned medical Doctor in the state who scored 1774 votes and the SDP candidate Abubakar Jamilu Garba who followed them with 149 votes. Declaring the results in Karim Lamido headquarter of the Local Government, the INEC returning officer said the election was highly contested and appreciated the candidates, their supporters, the entire people of Karim 1 State Constituency and all political Parties that participated in the bye election for exhibiting a high degree of maturity. BREAKING: CBN plans to change naira notes in 2024.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied plans to re-denominate the naira, saying, the statement credited to it on the various social media platforms is fake. Messages making the rounds on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook claim that the CBN plans to introduce a new naira policy that will see the naira being redenominated. According to the message, the redenomination process will take place by dropping two zeros from the currency or moving two decimal places to the left. The message read, “The name of the national currency will still be the Naira. However, during the transition period, the existing Naira will be referred to as the “Old Naira”, and the new one to be called the “New Naira”. After the transition period, the word “New” may be dropped. The management of the Yola  Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC was at the Government House, Jalingo to condole with the Governor of Taraba State Dr Agbu Kefas over the death of a family of four who were electrocuted. Receiving the management on behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, commended the company for the steps taken so far on the sad development and urged them to expedite action on compensation to the bereaved families. The Deputy Governor said the state will continue to partner with the company for constant electricity supply for the economic development of the state. He urged the company to look into the complaint of over-billing from the masses and adjust their charges in the interest of the people.
