Miyetti Allah crisis deepens as North East head resigns

The wrangling in the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) took a dramatic turn yesterday as the chairman of the region, Alhaji Umar Mafindi, stepped aside. The resignation, which was announced on his Facebook page, might be connected to his recent romance with the state governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, which he said, has drawn wide criticism from some members of the group.

The former chairman, who said his decision to romance with the governor was aimed at protecting the Fulani, expressed sadness that the genuine action has been misinterpreted by some of his people.Wondering why people have failed to appreciate his efforts, he said “I have stepped aside from the leadership,” adding, “I have no apology to anyone who thinks I made a wrong decision. All those noise makers have not, in anyway, made any contribution whenever we are at loggerheads with any authority.”

The former chairman decried why some persons are against the peaceful coexistence between the Fulani and other ethnic groups. “If I will be a leader without relevance, then my resignation is the best option.”When contacted on a telephone by The Guardian, he said his decision to bow out of the leadership position of the MACBAN has become necessary because “the group is not a political association, but a socio cultural association.”
